Additives can be labelled

In Germany, in the case of foods that are not pre-packaged, the customer needs to be informed about the following additives contained in food and meals

Colourings included

E 100 to E 180 – need to be labelled “contains colouring”

In addition, the note “May impair activity and attentiveness among children” needs to be used with the following colourings: E 102 – tartrazine, E 104 – quinoline yellow, E 110 – sunset yellow S E 122 – azorubine, E 124 – cochineal carmine A, E 129 – allura red AC

In which products/foods do these, for example, occur?
Candied fruit, cocktail cherries, tinned fruit and vegetables, confectionery, baked goods (wafers, biscuits, cake), cake decorations, edible ices, desserts, jelly, jams, preserves, chutneys, sauces, spices, instant soup, processed cheese, mustard, surimi, fish roe, smoked fish, salmon substitute, fish and crustacean pâtés, salty snacks, vinegar, sausages, margarine, butter, non-alcoholic flavoured drinks

Preservatives included

E 200 to E 219, E 234, E 235, E 239 E 249 to E 252, E 280 to E 285, E 1105 – need to be labelled “contains preservative” or “preserved”

The details “contains preservatives” or “preserved” may, in the case of E 249 to E 252, be replaced by “contains nitrite curing salt”, “contains nitrate” or “contains nitrite curing salt and nitrate”

Low-sugar jams and preserves, candied fruit, dried fruit, tinned fruit and vegetables, potato dough, gnocchi, polenta, meat products (sausages, cured meat products, poultry patès), fish products, packaged sliced cheese, processed cheese, margarine, egg products, bread and baked goods, gourmet salads, mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup, sauces and marinades, confectionery, salty snacks, cooked red beet, non-alcoholic flavoured drinks

Antioxidants included

E 300 to E 321, E 385, E 392, E 586 – need to be labelled “contains antioxidants”

Tinned fruit and vegetables, potato products, jams, preserves, bread and baked goods, baking mixes, desserts, breakfast cereal products, dried milk products, marinades, salty snacks, processed cheese, instant soups, spices, meat and sausage products, tinned meat and fish, edible fats and oils, animal fats and fatty foodstuffs, non-alcoholic flavoured drinks

Flavour enhancers included

E 355 to E 357, E 508 to E 511, E 620 to E 640 – need to be labelled “contains flavour enhancers”

Seasonings (cooking salt substitute, glutamate), instant soups, meat products, sauces, convenience foods (deep-frozen products, preserves)

Sulphur dioxide/sulphite included

E 220 to E 228 – need to be labelled “sulphurised”

Vinegar, potato products, dried fruit and vegetables, tinned vegetables, candied fruit, cake fillings

Iron(II) gluconate included

E 579 – or iron(II) lactate – to E 585 – need to be labelled “blackened”

Black olives

Substances used for surface treatment

E 901 to E 904, E 912, E 914 – need to be labelled “waxed”

Citrus fruit, apples, pears, melon

Phosphates contained in meat products

E 338 to E 341, E 450 and E 452 – need to be labelled “contains phosphate”

Sweeteners and sugar substitutes

E 420, E 421, E 950 to E 955, E 957, E 959 to E 962, E 965 to E 969 – need to be labelled “contains sweetener(s)”

  • Foods containing added sugar and permitted sweeteners need to be labelled “contains a type of sugar or sweetener”,
  • in the event of aspartame – E 951 – being used, they are additionally to be labelled “contains a source of phenylalanine”.
